Originally Ginger ale was a beer made with ginger and alcoholic, I had some a friend made once and was quite surprised at its potency. It was very light and I could not tell till afterwards that there was any alcohol in it. I have never seen such available commercially however.

Like marshmallows (which used to be made from the marsh mallow bush) people sell things commercially that have little relationship to its name or origins. At least Ginger ale is still fizzy and has ginger flavor, but is nowhere near as refreshing as the real thing.
