One of the ten commandments states that we shall not kill- and as far as I know, there is no ammendment to that that lists possible exceptions to this rule. So why do conservative Christians support capital punishment? Aren't they the ones we would expect most to adhere to the ten commandments? I have never understood this blatant hypocrisy, and I would like to know when it is okay to kill, and, above all, WHO is allowed to kill. Are there designated killers or something similar? Thank You!

The commandment, PROPERLY TRANSLATED, is “Do not commit murder." (Ex 20:13)

The "10 commandments" are NO LONGER IN EFFECT...

Ephesians 2:15 Through his body on the cross, Christ put an end to the law with all its commands and rules. He wanted to create one new group of people out of the two. He wanted to make peace between them.

Colossians 2:14 He wiped out the written Law with its rules. The Law was against us. It opposed us. He took it away and nailed it to the cross.

Galatians 2:16 ...No one can be made right with God by obeying the law.

Galatians 2:21 ...What if a person could become right with God by obeying the law? Then Christ died for nothing!

Galatians 5:4 Some of you are trying to be made right with God by obeying the law. You have been separated from Christ. You have fallen away from God’s grace... The ONLY verse that talks about falling from grace, and they did it by trying to follow the law!

Jesus said he didn’t come to destroy the law, but to fulfill it. (Matt 5:17) The effect was the same. Once fulfilled it was no longer in effect. The very next verse, Matthew 5:18, looks forward to the time when the law would be set aside. "...Not even the smallest stroke of a pen will disappear from the Law UNTIL EVERYTHING IS COMPLETED."

On the cross, Jesus' last recorded saying, "It is finished," is an important milestone. Because of Jesus life, Satan had been defeated. The law was finished and would no longer stand between God and mankind.

The 10 commandments along with the rest of the law ("commands and rules" from Ephesians 2:15) were "set aside" when they were fulfilled or completed at Jesus' resurrection. We are no longer bound by that law.

It is read as "thou shall not commit murder" Christians are not supposed to take the law into their own hands and become vigilantes. We have Governments to establish order and justice.

In the old testament many crimes were captial punishment and usually by stoning. When the Government judges a person and finds them guilty then in extreme cases the person is taken from the earth and sent to meet his maker. There are some criminals that can not be rehabilitated and will always be a threat to society and order. The situation is that they are then judged by God and sent on to their eternal reward. They should be given a chance to reconcile with God before they die.
In the case of wars we are certainly able to defend ourselves against agressors and not just lay down and let some ungodly people take over our country and murder and rape our families.

To me, I don't believe it is hypocritical. There is much evidence of warriors that God supported...to answer that. I always had a hard time of hearing someone on "death row" was "saved by the Lord" since He forgives all sins. I would be hard knowing what some of these people did. But in Romans we are taught that His people's government is ordained by him. The Lord may offer forgiveness, but that doesn't mean no punishment.

Secondly, the 10 commandments apply to the Jewish people too.

When the Bible was Translated in english it said "Thou sall not Kill", but you should study and find out that in hebrew it says "Thou shall not Murder". We must recognize that God has given the government the authority to determine when capital punishment is due (Genesis 9:6; Romans 13:1-7). It is unbiblical to claim that God opposes the death penalty in all instances. Christians should never rejoice when the death penalty is employed, but at the same time, Christians should not fight against the government’s right to execute the perpetrators of the most evil of crimes. Jesus Christ didn't accuse Pilate of Being a Murderer, but Jesus Said that God has given Him the authority to condemn murderers to death.

No, the commandment is not to murder. I'm a big proponent of human rights, believe me. HOWEVER, I think that murderers surrender those rights when they choose to take a life. I don't "like" capital punishment, because I can't stand to watch it...but on the other hand, it's my opinion that as long as it's not for vengeance, it's fine. It should only be to prevent that person from committing the crime again.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to break down and a time to build up; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance; a time to throw away stones and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing"- Ecclesiastes 3:1-5

Because one has not yet read a thing in his Bible does not mean it is not there my dear friend.
