To be an official Buddhist, a Buddhist monk can perform a ritual for you & you will be given a Buddhist name, just go to any temple and ask to talk to a monk. However, unlike the Christian form of baptize, it's not a requirement to be a Buddhism, anybody can be a Buddhist if they live their lives the way Buddha intend for them to.

It's true that you can be of any religion and still be able to practice Buddhism because Buddhism is not about what you believe, but rather about how you live your life as a person. However, because Catholic is more of an exclusive religion, you believe in one god only, you follow only the teaching of the bible, nothing else. So if you practice Buddhism, you are violating the Catholic rule.

It really depends, first, you should ask yourself what is it that make you want to change your religion from a Catholic to a Buddhist?

Buddhism does not restrict your beliefs. It can only make you a better Catholic. Your family doesn't have to know. You can meditate in the privacy of your own room as if you were taking a nap. If literature is a sensitive issue for the family then you can hide it.

Basically, Buddhism is only a practice, Compassion is Buddhism's main practice, I dont think Christianity is againts someone being compassionate right?

It is a good move to come to Buddhism, you can be Chatolic, Muslims, Taoist any religion you name it. There wont be any contrast.

Buddhism is similar to Taoism and Confucism-they are Philosophies-NOT RELIGIONS!!!!

BTW-Mahayana or Theravada-Big Differences!

FYI-Catholics can be practitioners of all three Philosophies!

The Buddha was Hindu! Hindu's worship the one true God like Jews and Christians and is very much worth looking into also!

The nature of the Prakrit Self Vs. the Atman is a very good awareness and the Bahgavad Gita and the Upanishads are interesting reading!

you dont have to give up your belief in God to study the Buddhist philosophies you know
and you cant simply not believe in God because you like another religion
why not mix them ?
it can work
have your faith and learn about meditation and philosophies also
