My chihuahua does the most annoying thing: whenever I give him something to eat like a small treat, instead of eating it right away, he puts iitn the nearest blanket and buries it with his nose--he'll kep at it for a while, almost like it has to nestled just right. He stands guard over it for about 30min or longer, then eats it. Why????

He is protecting his food. You may try giving him smaller treats, even breaking those itty-bitty treats into smaller pieces to help break him of this.

Another thing you could try to give him an instant reward is to buy a can of the Kong spray and give him a little squirt of it when you want to praise him. This spray is similar in consistency to the cans of squirt cheese, but completely safe for dogs. I have used this with my dogs, and they love it!

its a natural instinct. they will do this if they dont want to eat it right away to make sure nothing else gets it. another reason could be that he doesnt really have a reason he just follows the instinct! to break this habityou could take the treat out of the blanket & not give it back. just be sure you take it out as soon as he buries it. then say no in a firm voice. when he does right praise him & give him 1 more treat & if he dooesnt bury the second treat praise him. hope this helps!!!!!!!!

I don't know, but my dogs have always done it too! It's adorable though. Sometimes they leave the room to "bury" their bone. I think maybe it's an instinct to hide something in case there are threats nearby. They can eat it later when they feel like no one will take it from them.
