I have a friend whose dog's eyes are both indigo, and I've heard about dogs with multiple colors in one eye and with each eye being a different color.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows what this is called or what causes this.

'Heterochromia' is a term used to describe variations in the color of the iris, the colored portion of the eye. 'Heterochromia' is also used to describe a multi-colored iris within the same eye, or two eyes with distinctly different colored irises.

This condition can occur in dogs and cats. Individuals with irises of different colors are common in many dog breeds including Siberian Huskies, Great Danes, Dalmatians, and Malamutes. Vision is completely normal in these individuals and heterochromia is not considered a medical problem but rather a normal variation in eye color.

My own Aussie mix has one eye hat is half blue and half brown, while the other is all brown.

It's all in the genes, it what the dogs inherit from their parents, some breeds can be born with one brown eye and one blue eye (just a colour example) and you'll find alot of them have two or more colours in their coat for example brown and white, and usually a brown patch will cover the brown eye and the blue eye will have white around it. Many cats and dogs with white fur and blue eyes are deaf, which is another inherited gene.

Some dogs like Australian shepards, Huskies, Malamutes and mixed breeds have blue or mixed eyes. Heterochromia is the name of the condition where the colour of one iris has two colours or when two eyes have different coloured irises.

Yes, mixbred dogs can have multicolored eyes, because eye color is a codominant genetic external caracteristic. Codominant means that both eye colours inherited by the mother and the father can be expressed, so you can see a dog with eyes that are half indigo-half brown, and has no pathologic significance.

its just eye color, some breeds are more likely to have different eyes than other, huskies are the most known for blue eyes. austrialian shephards can have then too, i have an aussie with one brown and one blue. some breeders will breed for it, because it is popular. some people blame crazy behavior on multi-colored eyes. that is silly. its all in genes though. it doesnt mean they have peoblems seeing, or that they are crazy

some times it is a mix bred in the history of some dogs like say if you breed a husky with a german sheppard. they may even have one eye one color and the other eye blue.

My dog has this. It's called a dapple. I'm pretty sure it's caused by inter breeding (brother + sister). My dog was rescued from a puppy mill and he was used for breeding. There's also double dapples where they have 2 different colored eyes and are also deaf or have other problems. It's really sad.

i think of it is common for eyes to be distinct. I had blue eyes till i replaced into abour 4 or 5 years previous. Then for the period of the summer season, one eye grew to become green. After the summer season it went back to blue. This went on till i replaced into 7 years previous. After that my eyes replaced to green with golden and blue speckles in them (birthmarks). So unusual. i think of you're completely widespread nonetheless.

multi-colored eyes have absolutely nothing to do with inbreeding. in most breeds it is passed on as part of the merle gene. in many breeds blue eyes are called "glass" eyes and eyes that have 2 colors in them are called "cracked" eyes.
