If you are trying to preserve it for next year and DO NOT INTEND TO EAT IT.. you can try using a clear lacquer or polyurethane spray. You can find a clear coat at any hobby store. Put newspapers down in a well ventilated area remove any paper or stray tinsel from the house and spray according to the can. Don't forget to spray the inside of the house as well to create a nice waterproof seal.
They can last a long time if sealed with the clear coat spray. Store it in its own box (plastic would be best) and pack only when dry surrounded by newspapers balled up to prevent it from moving around.
Hope this helped and you get to enjoy your gingerbread house for many years to come!

Well, if you don't ever intend on eating it, you could go to any craft or hardware store and buy clear coat in a spray can and give it a couple of coats. Just be sure that any little one's that might admire it don't try to taste it!
