I'll give you an honest answer....... It depends.

If it's a gay whose sexuality is the center of his/her universe then there's going to be trouble. If it's a gay who's "in your face" about it, well, there's going to be trouble.

I served 22 years. I served with many gays. I served with gays who managed to make it all the way to retirement without getting kicked out. They did their jobs and left their sexual activities and love interests in the bedroom. We all knew they were gay. They never had a problem.

Most of the soldier (about 90 %) can't stand the idea.
Most of the Army demographically comes from what part of the country? Think about it.
I not against it as long as you let every soldier that doest approve of it to pack his or her bags and go home. If their is a shortage of personnel than all the people that vote for gays in the military will than get drafted into the services.

In todays world where the gay population is more prevalent one would think that a gay male would perform in the military just as well as a straight male. I do not condone the gay lifestyle, but in todays society we have to let bygones be bygones and get along. However not everyone feels the same way I do and yes I believe since those who do not feel that gays should not be anywhere, it would affect mostly the morale in the military structure.

I can say that in my day in the military (cold war era) it would have been negative. there was so much prejudice about it that I doubt any gay person could have taken what the military could have dished out. In my fathers day WW2 it was seen as a crime, punishable by life in a Military Prison. In my children's day? Who knows? But for right now, I still think the military "Don't ask, don't tell," is just fine.

Ill admit that I would not care much if he was hurt nor would I be willing to risk my life for him. Although thinking like that would undermine our objectives so I would have to risk my life for him, but thinking or hesitating for thinking like that would really mess with a guys head so yeah it would affect performance.
I served in combat and didn't think twice of what I mentioned earlier but no one admitted they were gay and if they were then not saying anything was smart.
