We're thowing a bridal shower for my best friend and her fiance. They wanted something real low-key since neither likes to be the center of attention, so we decided to thow an evening couples shower at a local restaurant/bar (most invites are to early 20-somethings who aren't into the "froofy wedding thing" but more about hanging out). We are going to be providing appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks, but the bar will still be open so people can additionally order what they want. I wanted to include something about this in the invite, but i don't know how to word it. By including this, I don't want people to feel like they have to buy something, but at the same time i want our frat boys to know up front that I can't cover their drink tab...how can I word this somewhat eloquently?

What about "Appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided. *Location*'s bar and restaurant will also be available."

just say that appetizers and non-alcoholic drinks will be served. they will get the point that if they want booze they have to buy it themselves. I did something similar only we didnt have food or anything. people just showed up at the bar for drinks and already assumed they would be buying their own...and they bought mine too as I was the one getting married.

I think the term you are looking for is "cash bar". You want to be careful about saying non-alcoholic drinks provided because those lovely energy drinks cost about $4/per and they are non-alcholic beverages. At $4/per you might as well be paying for the beers. Make sure that the bar is very clear about what you will pay for and what the guests will pay for. At the bottom of the invitation you could put:

"Appetizers Sodas Cash Bar"

You really don't have to put on the Invitation what you are serving, but if it is after the dinner hour they should know that it won't be a meal. If they know the place they know it has a bar. You could say lite finger foods and punch - or nothing at all and just spread it by word of mouth Have Fun and Good Luck! Oh! yes if they purchase their own drinks from the bar you are not responsible for them - only when you give it to them free..

Try something like "Non-alcoholic drinks and appetizers will be served. A cash bar will also be available."

You may want to get a couple of bottles of inexpensive champagne (don't buy it from the restaurant, they'll charge you too much,) for a toast.

Just say that there will be appetizers and a cash bar. Everyone should know what the term cash bar is. Good luck, it sounds like fun!

So, like, there'll be boys there? Hmm, that's cool. Just say refreshments and appetizers will be available, drinks available for purchase at the bar.

Join us in celebrating the upcoming nuptials of Dick and Jane at Joe's Bar and Grill. Date and time.

Appetizers and (some) beverages included...

Hmm. Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

I think you have it basically right:

"Appetizers and punch will be provided. Additional menu items and acoholic drinks available at you own expense. Please plan accordingly."
