Recently one of my Hindu friends decided to become a vegetarian. When she told me, I asked her, is this a decision you are making based on religious belief? And she said, it's not so much a religious reason, it's more of a spiritual thing. What did she mean by this?

In a worldly view it could mean several thing as you seen for yourself but from a Divine stand point we were created by a spiritual being and prayer would be the highest form of a spiritual life. It is the only way to get in touch with God. It doesn't mean formal prayer necessarily but to somehow be in touch with Him

She is listening to her consciousness in making this decision, not because of religious tradition. Spiritual can mean many things but never means religious, despite the two always being confused.

It's an indecisive effort to conform to the image in her head of what spiritual people do.

If she were actually to conform to a religion, she would have to study, learn, and act accordingly. Spirituality is basically "let's pretend" religion.
