that's totally a personal preference. what style of beers do you like: ales, lagers, IPAs, stouts, bocks, etc.? chances are you'll find a style that suits you, and within that style you'll find some brands that appeal to you more.
america has hundreds of microbreweries putting out some fine brews. check out some of the menus from breweries in Michigan (Bell's, Dark Horse, New Holland, Dragonmead, Founders), California (Stone, Sierra Nevada, Bear Republic, Alesmith, Pizza Port), and Wisconsin (Great Dane, New Glarus, Viking, Capital, Sprecher) -- they have some top-notch establishments winning national and international awards.
if you are speaking strictly in terms of the "big guys" and not microbrews, then both Pabst (PBR and Old Style) and Miller have won awards in the recent World Beer Cup competition.
Here's a great site for checking on what people think are some of the best beers in the world:

for this particular season it is the Alaskan Brewery Winter ale, brewed with spruce tips, so you can taste the tree. Nice hint of sweetness for a nice winternight. Overall i would look into the beers made by the Speakeasy brewery in San Francisco or if you're from the eastcoast the beers from Ommegang brewery in Cooperstown, NY.

Depends what kind of beer you like? Heavy or Light Beers? There are sooooo many handcrafted beers in the USA. Personally I like Yuengling for a good beer flavor. Its not too heavy and not too light.

That's a toss-up for me. Having grown up in Pennsylvania, I love Yuengling, but after spending the past 8 years in Cleveland, the Great Lakes beers have really grown on me.

It comes down to a matter of your own personal taste.
While traveling I prefer to try the local micro-brews, but the national brands I prefer are...
Sam Adams Lagers and Ales
Shiner Bock.
Rolling Rock.
Unfortunately I can't afford those that often, so I buy the 30 pack of Busch Light on sale.
