The word "Belief" is certainly an odd duck. The scientist seeks proof, while the non scientist seeks belief. I find it empowering to say "I believe this or that", as though I can create reality just by saying the word, therefore bypassing all of the dull fact finding and analysis of the scientist. Consider the following: BELIEF may or may not imply certitude in the believer (my belief that I had caught all the errors). FAITH almost always implies certitude even where there is no evidence or proof (an unshakable faith in God). --Webster's online

your question reminds me of a great quote from a movie (which if your icon is really the "buddy chirst" you'll understand, the icon is small so I'm not sure"

"I think it's better to have ideas. You can change an idea, changing a belief is trickier, people kill for it, people die for it"
~Dogma

I have my own personal ideas about God and the Universe and how it all came to be, but my ideas do not fit into any organized religion in existance

Faith is sometimes all you have to get you through the hard times. If God came down to earth and said here I am! Everyone is gonna be good and nothing bad will ever happen again to anyone. That would I believe twart the whole purpose of being on Earth. To learn and grow and return to God. If there is no sadness can there be any joy? How will you appreciate anything if everything is always good?
