My family travels to China nearly every March-April, we stay in Beijing for a few days, then on to the provinces where our children were born. It's always been long sleeve weather, sweater with shirt under it, sometimes rainy. I've yet to need the heavy coat I pack, but sometimes the wind cuts through your clothes so layers is the best way to dress. It's usually in the 50-60 range when we go.

the weather in beijing in april is more like that in philadelphia than cities further north. there is a big difference between temperatures at the beginning of the month (mid 50's to 60's) and those at the end of the month (mid 60's to high 70's)--much warmer at the end of the month. the second half of the month is much better for travel and the leaves are almost fully out by mid-april.

The average temperature in Beijing in April is 13.5 celsius (about 55 F). The Beijing travel sites state that April is one of the best months to travel there though some warn of what is called a yellow wind in the spring. I'm not quite clear what that is but it is thought to contribute to the spread of foot and mouth disease.

Welcome to Beijing - my hometown!
April is consider mid-Spring in Beijing, and weather is quite nice. You should see the blooming flowers everywhere and this old city start to turn green! I think specially White Magnolia and cherry blossom are absolutely gorgeous! However sometimes there are sand storms in early to mid Spring. Other than that you should have a wonderful time there!
You can check the weather of Beijing from this link: http://www.jiasdreamtours.com/tt_climate.html

Beijing is about the same latitude as Chicago, and has about the same weather. I have only been there once (October 2005) and found it to be chilly and windy, just like Chicago.
Those that I work with that have been there more often have told me they find the weather in Beijing to be roughly that of Chicago or Cleveland throughout most of the year.

April is quite nice. Tempertures are comfortable - ranging from 15C to about 25C.
However, depending on the year the wind storms may be bad. The 'yellow wind' that was talked about by someone else is a spring wind that comes in from the desert, and coats everything in a fine yellow dust. Sometimes it is worse then other times. But all in all, it is a great time to go there!

As mike i answered, and I want him to get all the credit for it, 'a great time to be there'. As the weather picks by the end of May, the influx of tourists can be a choking experience, if you know what I mean!!!
