Our fingernails are made up primarily of dead cells, called keratin. As the older cells die and harden, they are pushed out. Growth takes place in the martix, which is hidden under the cuticle. The martix will push those older cells out causing the growth. The average nail growth is 3mm per month or 3/32 of an inch.

Now, if you wanted to know how to make your nails grow longer:
1. water is the enemy...it softens nails so wear gloves
2. don't abuse your nails by using them to pick or pry things
3. don't bite your nails
4. don't pick or chew on your cuticles
5. rub moisturizer into your nails when you apply it to your hands
6. keep your nails short and slightly rounded
7. don't use polish remover more than twice a month
8. apply a nail hardener, but avoid products containing toluene sulfonamide or formaldehyde

Hello! Yes, this is correct. I will provide you a quote from: 'An Atlas of diseases of the Nail' - Phoebe Rich & Richard Scher (2003): "Rate of Growth Fingernails, unlike har, grow continuously, at a rate of approximately 0.1 mm/day or 3mm a month. Toenails grow a about one-half to one-third the rate of fingernails. A fingernail regenerates in 4-6 months, toenails in 8-12 months or more. Certain states affect the rate of the nail growth; for example, nails grow faster during pregnancy and in psoriasis" The major cause of this difference is not very well understood, however it might be due to blood and nerve supply (which is probably higher in the fingers compared to the toes) + the fact that fact that fingernails get more easily damaged ... which stimulates the evolutionary mechanism for regeneration. I think that its because we use out fingers more often. I've also noticed what you have noticed about my fingernails growing faster than my toenails but I've also noticed that some of my fingernails grow faster than some of my other fingernails on the same hand. This is because we use our hands more often than our feet and sometimes we use some of our fingernails more often than some of our other finger nails. I'm still not sure but that's what I think.

A little bit of toenail is fine... but I agree together with you. Long nails are kinda low.
