I've been doing this for quite a while, plugging my RJ-11 (phone line) connector into my RJ-45 (CAT5) jack.

Just be aware that the RJ-11 connector may deform the outer two wires in your RJ-45 jack, which you might need just in case you plan to route Ethernet over those lines one day.
