In ancient Hebrew stories, giving a name meant having dominion or lordship over the one named. Adam naming the animals shows us (without being blatant) that he is of a higher order than the animals.

It also shows us something else - that without the woman, Adam is not complete! In the story, Adam names all of these animals, but wait! There is no suitable companion for him! Then God creates the woman. It is not an afterthought - it is meant to show us how important the woman is!

Man and woman together - THIS is what is meant by the "image of God" because God is not a singularity, God is a Trinity - a community of persons. A husband and a wife and their children are a little picture of the Trinity!

The purpose of the Garden of Eden was to have an established place where man and God could fellowship. God and Adam used to hang out in the garden.

My personal belief is that God just wanted to talk about the animals with Adam, and I wouldn't be suprised if the platypus really WAS intended to get a laugh out of Adam after he just got done naming the duck and the beaver.

God brought the animals to Adam to see what he would call them. Whatever he called them that was the name thereof. The animals already had names. God already named the animals. God was coming into agreement with Adam to demonstrate that we are created in His image and likeness.

God is wondrous in the fact that he made man with a free will and very intelligent. Because of the close relationship Adam had with God, He would bring the animals He created to Adam to name to share this with Adam.
To give a name to something is to give it it's identity, what it would be know as, what it was to become.
Just as the name Jacob means 'he who holds back or he that catches by the heel' because that's what Jacob did to Esau his brother. Then later when Jacob wrestled with the angle, his name was changed to Israel 'wrestler with God or leader[prince] with God', he was to no longer hold back but to lead with God.

Since God wanted man to be ruler of the beasts of the Earth, it would be his responsibility to name all of the animals. Thus, since Adam was the first man, it was his job.

Example: When you have a baby, you have the job to name it.

God gave him a dominion over them, and probably was amused at what names Adam came up with.

A great Ogden Nash poem has Adam offering all the simple animal names (cat, moose, etc) and Eve giving all the complicated ones (armadillo, hippopotamus, and many too odd for me to remember), then wrapping with the punchline that when it comes to calling names, girls always win.

So that men could understand the words. If a women had named them, men would have had a hard time trying to pronounce and spell all the big words. Just kidding.

God had enough to do with making everything, he didn't want to have to think up names for it all as well.

You absolutely have to read "Eve's Diary" by Mark Twain. It's a short story available free online. In it, the task is given to her b/c she's so much better then him!! Kinda funny if you ask me.
In the Bible however, it was just to give Adam something to do and kind of help him take ownership over the earth.
