Generally speaking, they cannot work. There isn't enough contact. I'm not talking about sexual contact either. To have a good relationship, you need to actually sit down with the person you're dating and talk to them, and see their body language, and be able to hold them. You can't do that stuff from a distance. Good night!

I've been seeing a guy for a month, he works as an engineer 5 hour drive / 45 min flight away. He is hoping to come down on weekends, probably not every single one, but close to. We are going to try to make it work. I feel like I should call him all the time to let him know what I've been up to, so that he doesn't get suspicious or jealous. hope that it works cause I like him a lot. Once I'm done school it'll be different, and I can go visit him. I feel like we can make it work, cause his last girlfriend cheated on him, and my ex has as well, so we both know what its like, and we wouldn't do that to eachother. Hopefully that makes our relationship a little stronger.

I know of one that worked.
Long distance for over 2 years in the beginning.
Married for 15 years now.
I will say that it took what some think of as a cliche: True Love.
And a whole lot of stubbornness to not quit on it, from both sides.

Lots and lots of communication, and frequent visits if possible. Also knowing when you might end up in the same place. That has to happen at some point for it to last long term. Being on the same page as to when that will happen is also key. Also caring about what is going on in that person's life where they are. If you don't stay connected with what's going on in their life and vice versa, it won't last. It will feel too disconnected.

If you must, make sure there's frequent phone calls. Otherwise it's out of sight, out of mind.
