Manhattan Island, the commercial and business heart of New York City, is about 12 miles long by 3 miles wide. This large metropolitan area is vaguely divided into a number of different districts or communities. But Manhattan is not a city by itself, it's a borough of the larger New York City area.

The Borough of Manhattan is an island. The city of New York is a collection of boroughs. Staten Island, for example, is an island. The boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn are across the East River from Manhattan -- part of Long Island, really. Bronx is attached to the mainland.

and unless something is done about global warming, it won't be here in 30 years (or maybe even less). there will be fish swimming through the streets as the polar ice caps melt and flood coastal areas, and manhattan island.
