One concern I've always been worried about is this. Usually the college educated or those with some education serve while those who just don't want to go to school or just drop out don't have this obligation. Good theme to discuss and explore in a good objective matter and non offensive way. There's so much talent being lost

Some would say we have a more intelligent armed forces because of the educational levels of some. Yet, their blood is just as red as the high school dropout, and they die, regardless of their degree.

I'm from the school that believes a high school drop out is just as effective, and in some cases more effective, than the grunt with his MBA. The drop out is often a kid from the streets who has developed certain survival skills that the spoon fed over achiever never even considered, until he got in a situation where people will do him harm if given half a chance.

The drop out will smell the offender, or at least recognize certain conditions that are potentially dangerous, whereas the MBA better be listening to the senior NCO, about what to look out for.

Your concerns about who is serving and who is not will not be resolved unless there is a draft. Take comfort in knowing that this is the first war since before WWII, that the guy with little education wasn't the first to go to war. The military is mainly to blame for this, with its insistence that the average grunt have a minimum education. They left behind an untold potential for making quota. They should reconsider some of these people, at least the ones who could score a reasonable number on an IQ test.

I think that's a great question. This wasn't always the case, "foot soldiers" have always typically been the lower income or less educated. The military is still a great way to get out of a bad neighborhood, get a good education and even see the world. That many people who view themselves as "stuck" in adverse situations don't take advantage of that opportunity...is too bad. They could be smart enough to do great things in the military, especially if its true that they only don't succeed because of their surroundings.

The methods of our military have changed, it is not as much an issue of whoever has the most men wins. It's evolved more into a strategic and operational network which REQUIRES higher educations and intelligence. I don't think its an issue of talent being lost or wasted, I think the military is the PERFECT place to have our most intelligent and hardest working citizens, its just a shame we don't pay more for doing something as important as risking their lives and keeping us safe.

First off, the well educated people serving are generally Officers. They don't have an obligation to join the Armed Services in the United States unless they enrolled in a ROTC program that they had to put in a minimum amount of service to equal the amount of money the military put into helping out with college tuition.
As far as the "less" educated personnel, they aren't less likely to join the military.
I'm not sure you worded this question properly for the discussion you wanted to start.

First, don't forget about the women fighting and DYING for their country!!!

Second, I think to be accepted into the military you are required to have a high school diploma or a GED or HSED.
Not everyone who doesn't have a college education is ignorant or uneducated. In fact many people join the military to earn the money to later attend college.

Kerry is an idiot.

Ok...the war is no longer being fought by uneducated people, technology has made it so that the high school drop out is a liability to the military. Educated people are needed to understand, use and repair the equipment used in the military.

There was a little truth to what that idiot John Kerry said. I served 97-01 and I think there should be stricter guidelines attached to intellect for MEPS. When someone is running around with an automatic weapon or grenades, I think they need to exhibit some type of responsibility with their OWN life before they can be trusted with the lives of their fellow soldiers.

I wouldn't want losers that can't even get through school defending the country. It takes a certain amount of dedication and the ability to finish a task to be successful in the military. As well as a willingness to follow orders and conform to standards. To give of ones self in the service of others. To sacrifice and endure hardship.

Your question makes no sense at all ! "good educated men fight the war while those who leave school don't have this obligation."

Too tired to fathom out the grammatical construction of this sentence !

Bums on the street don't make good soldiers. They end up as fodder.

Wars are best won without combat.
