I know how you feel. When I was a girl, I always wanted a cat; I would bring home stray cats and pet all the cats in the neighbourhood. But couldn't have one at home - mom wouldn't have minded, dad did mind! I just had to be really patient until I was grown up, done university, living on my own - and I got a cat! Have had cats ever since, and still love them just as much. One thing I did as a kid was to be a neighbourhood pet sitter - if people with cats went on holiday, I would go in and feed and water the cats. That gave me a good dose of being able to be around pets a bit.
Don't nag your mom about this; respect her answer to you. Depending on your age, maybe you could volunteer at the humane society, an animal shelter, work at a pet store - anything putting you more into contact with cats.

That would be a debate I've had with my parents for many years. I believe their biggest concern was that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the responsiblity (and a pet is a BIG responsiblity) and all the upkeep would end up falling on them. Your mom probably has this same concern, so you'd have to prove her wrong. Consider offering pet sitting services to neighbors or volunteer at an animal shelter. Show that you can clean up after yourself just as you would clean up after a pet.

The debate ended last year and we now have two new additions to the household. While they are considered "my" cats when they are in trouble, they have made life brighter for everyone.

As a parent, I can tell you that it's not always easy to say no when your children want more pets (we have two dogs). To be a responsible pet owner, I MUST say no. I do not have the time for another pet and I certainly don't have the money for another pet. Not just the initial vaccines, but the spay (or neuter), food, grooming, if they get sick, an emergency visit, flea preventative, HW preventative, medications if necessary long term (both my dogs are on life long meds), and the list can go on. I don't go to any groomer, I want the best for me and my dogs. I don't buy cheap food (it's all bad for them with the ingredients they use), I want what's best for my dogs. Proper nutrition keeps them healthy.

My kids often ask why we can't go away for a weekend or why we can't go on a vacation. Well, let's see...we have two dogs.... Pets can be boarded, but i choose not to. They are a part of my family and I take good care of them. If I can't provide what I feel is minimally the best for them, then we are best not getting any more.

As a Mom, I know that pets have accidents, too. My house is not clean (per say) because of the hair, odor, dirt that is dragged in, etc. Here's a link for responsible pet ownership and see if you are ready for everything it talks about. If you think you are, then good luck to you! And remember, adopting a pet might save money in the long run with vaccines and spaying or neutering, as the adoptive pet may already be altered and UTD on vaccines.

Good luck.

My daughter wanted a cat for three years. Last year 2006, she finally got her cat. She demonstrated that she would look after the animal by picking up responsibilities around the house and taking care of the dogs that we own ie feeding, brushing, picking up poo and walking them.
She is 11.
I did not want a cat as I love the wild life and too many irresponsible cat owners are out there..
She googled cat breeds that only wanted to stay indoors and they love it, low maintenance and she looked for a cat that she cat get involved with... her choice: a Ragdoll kitten.

Yes she is dearer than the average free moggie. I do not regret one cent that I have paid for her as she is living up al our standards.. to help along, my daughter saved up her pocket money and she got close to the amount necessary. It was her dream and she got it.

Now she has a beautiful blue eyed, very fluffy cat that follows her everywhere and anywher in the house. She does not moult and feels soft like a rabbit. She gets dressed up when in play, sleeps with her, and engages in chasing activities with her. Not once has she set foot outside and missed the outdoors...she will sit on her cat scratcher looking out her window and watch the world go by until she is back from school.. she just turned one now...

Point is: what are you prepared to do for her? What will you sacrfice? How can you demonstrate that you will be a respoansible owner? Show this to your mum and sure enough she might just change her mind....don't go on whinging about it - show her!

I feel sorry for you one problem is you don't want to have a huge fight other wise it ends with both of you upset. Now some points you could make are:
They are cheap to look after (but vet bills and reregistration can sometimes be costly)
If you get a CAT from an animal shelter you'll be saving an animals life because most people don't want a 3 or 4 year old (but we did and they are still fun)
They are affectionate
You'll look after it and love it example feeding, brushing, playing, etc
Show you're responsible

If you get one make sure to desex him/her.

Good luck but don't hassle your mum to much other wise she'll just get cross.

prove to her by doing alot of chores and show her u r responsible, get a job and earn money to pay for the cat.... then ask her, tell her ur willing to care for it and feed it out of ur pay. Then ask HER to take you to the local pet adoption center and have her help you pick out a kitten

good luck

My neice gave this argument to her mom: "Mom, would you rather I get smoochie and care for a cat like bonkers... or out looking for a boy to get smoochie with and get bonkers over?" My sister saw the light right away and took my neice to choose a kitten to go smoochie and bonkers over.
