I want to import my dog from the US to asutralia and there is a rabies test required for teh approval process of the application...i want to have it done well ahead of time to make sure that the quarantine center wont run out of room for my dog when its time to leave the country...the test must be done at least 4 weeks afetr a rabies shot was administered...my dog had his last vaccine nov 2006 so is due again nov 2007..i want to leave aug 2008..can i get the rabies shot administered before nov 2007? or will ithave harmfull side effects to get it done too soon? I dont want to risk my dog not being able to go to asutralia with me when i leave (i'm on a work visa here and it runs out in sep 08 so i will have to leav ethe country i cant extend my stay)...and i dont want my dog to spend over 30 days in quarantine either ...if the test is done 150 + days befoer arrival in aust the dog will stay min 30 days in quarantine...135 days = 45 days quarantine etc up to 115 days quarantine

Yes. There are situations where a "booster" vaccine must be given, and if proof of vaccination is lost, another vaccine often has to be given. I am not a fan of over-vaccination either, but rabies is nothing to mess with!!
My dog are always up to date on vacccines, but last year they "played" with a skunk and killed it. They all got "boosters" the next day.

Hi
Actually yes. The animal shelters always give the new dog a rabies even thought they don't have their medical records. I just asked my vet this and he said yes because i got a rescue and she had her shots 3 months ago but the owner lost the records so I had to re do her rabies again so I could get tags. Hope this helps.

I would avoid over vaccination. Some states are on a 3 year rabies protocol. Meaning boosters are every 3 years. It is the same shot though. The American Animal Hospital Association has a 3 year compromise too. If you have to I guess you have to. Please look at this

It shouldn't be a problem. The dog may not really need it yet, but it will not hurt anything.

I doubt that there would be a problem but check with your vet just to be sure.

That's a question for a vet - not for us.
