This may be gross but I once had a patient who refused to floss...never did, wasn't going to start either he told me. After I flossed his teeth, he asked what the smell was and I told him it was the floss. He wanted to smell, so I let him. I told him that was the smell of the beginnings of periodontal disease if he didn't start doing it more often. To date, I know he is an avid flosser, at least after his meals and some in between I think. That smell is the smell of bacteria...and if it smells that bad to you, imagine what it is doing to your gum tissues.

I hope you maintain your flossing habits from now on :-)

Yes, that happened to me when I first started flossing in my life. It's old food trapped between your teeth and that foul smell is caused by bacteria breaking the food down. Yea, ewwww, its pretty gross. Keep flossing, best if everyday, and the floss won't smell bad that much anymore.
