A good, handy Spanish dictionary. Are you a Spanish specialist?

I'm thinking of buying a Spanish-English, English-Spanish dictionary for myself (take Spanish 12 in the up-coming new semester). What's the best Spanish dictionary that you ever used? By that I mean easy to understand, doesn't have complex explanations. I've looked up a number of dictionaries in the library, but none worked to me.

It depends on what level you are at. If you are a beginner (which I gather you are from the fact that you'll be taking Spanish 12), I recommend the "Diccionario Inglés". This is actually a dictionary that are intended for Spanish speakers, but you can use it as an English speaker too. It defines English words in both English and Spanish, so you can see how some concepts in English are expressed in Spanish.

You don't really need a super-thick dictionary as a beginning-level language learner because you probably will never use all of those words. I use the University of Chicago Spanish-English Dictionary and I like it because it's thick enough to have a lot of words, but not too thick. That makes it more portable, too.

After I got to the point where I was looking for a monolingual Spanish dictionary, I got the Vox Diccionario Actual de la Lengua Española and I am very happy with it.

I don't use this dictionary but I suspect that it's good: The Harper-Collins Beginner's Spanish Dictionary. It's a bilingual dictionary as well.

By the way, it's not just about the dictionary, but how you use it. So you can work on your dictionary skills and that will help with whatever dictionary you have.

You can buy the Larousse this is more about Spanish because it comes from Spain or the Oxford u know, but you should check the dictionary before buying it, so you will see which of them is for you, In that way you will choose the best one.One that you understand.

I´ve been a translator for almost thirty years now and have a vast collection of Spanish/English, English/Spanish dictionaries. I can honestly tell you that Simon and Schuster is the best one. If ever I get stumped with a word in either language, I can always find it in that one.

The best is larousse, if you don´t find it in USA ask for help in Mexico to get it, buy the big one.
