I need actual stories and accounts of recidivism (repeat offender) and how rehabilitation does not work at all. This is for a persuasive speech. I would also love to have links that could perhaps give me more light as well as statistics. I really really need stories. Thank you so much. Email me if need be.

My opinion is that one major reason that prison does not work for rehabilitation involves the sentencing and hinges on the detrimental effects the "war on drugs" has created with the entire penal system. Most people in prison are there for non-violent offenses (i.e. drug charges). This has overcrowded the system and allowed violent offenders that belong in there to walk.

You may find something useful in the links below.

The proposed main goal of the prison systems are suppose to be to rehabilitate the inmates, but this does not always fall true. I know a girl who is an alcoholic and has been in and out of the prison systems most of her life for DWI's. When she was in prison and'or jail all her letters would talk about is, how she was going to tie one on when she got out. This doesn't seem like rehibilitation or punishment to me. You have to keep in mind that most prisons and/or jails; are revolving doors because of all of the over-crowding. In my opinion, they should put the petty crimes back on the the streets with court supervision; and keep the more serious crimes in prison/jail and treat them like that is where they are at. Right now the people in prison/jail think they are on a long vacation. Plus, the worst of the population are taught by older and more knowledgeable prisoners; how to become better and do bigger things once they get out. And on a final note; gangsters go into prisons looking for their type of gangs to join.

I am sorry I am not writing anything helpful to you, but I do disagree with the assumption. I think the main goal should be specifically to protect the public.

Well, actually, maybe this is helpful: I don't think you can persuade anyone that rehabilitation does not work "at all", only that the statistics are very disappointing .

Rehabilitation is a theory that was given up on many years ago in the Prison system. All prison are overcrowded and staffing is low, and almost all offenders get out early.

Not sure how this would help you out with people given you info. You honestly would be better off going to your local police department and asking for some information regaurding your question. The reason why I state this is the laws differ from state to state. Like here in MA where im from, a repeated sex offender can change his/her name legally while in prison and the taxes pay for it. Shame isnt it

Assault and battery on a P.O. 11/04, DUI 11/04, DUI 8/02 Assault and battery-Domestic Violence 1/06, Restraining Order Violation 6/05, Embezzlement late 2006. Jail makes you want to commit worse crimes, like murder. It makes you violent. I saw a guy come through the pod for a few days and he was on the news a week later - shootout with the police wounding an officer before he was killed. I saw a guy get his teeth knocked out over a bet where the required payment was a cookie.
