The concept of fasting is giving up/sacrificing something you love as an act of homage to God. The islamic religion fast in a safe healthy way that I believe God would recommend. No food during day light and when you eat in the evening it is a for the most part a vegitarian meal. One of the keys to fasting from food is to dedicate the time you would have spent eating to prayer.
THe bible talks about not letting people know of your fast because you may seem boastful. Informing you teachers and even classmates that for religious reasons you will be taking your lunch time in the Library for prayer and meditation is not boastful and God will actually be very proud that you shared your faith with others.
The ability to fast is a developed skill. 40 days is the ultimate fasting but is not recommended without doctor supervision and practice. At your age a one week fast of no food during daylight and evening meals of Breads, nuts, fruits, beans and vegatables would be greatly honored by God. Make sure soy (soy milk, tofu, Tempeh, etc.) is in all your meals at you stge of growth you need a protien rich diet even when fasting.

It is good that you are asking about fasting but you do not have to fast until you reach the age of 13. It is a little known fact that prayer and fasting could stop a war. These are The blessed Mothers words. Once you reach that age once a week is fine also remember that Fridays, all fridays is a penantential day aswell.

Try a week at first and work your way up from there. Make sure you drink some juice and lots of water. Put some oil on your face so others won't know. Fasting is good for you. It allows your body to rest and expel toxins. You should fast at least once a month.

It can be how ever much or long as you feel comfortable with. Read Isaiah 58 for some help with it and the proper way to fast. Obedience is better than fasting alone.

24 hours should be plenty of time. You can always fast again in a week or so. If you do not want people to know than do not talk about it or moan about being hungry. You should probably just tell your mother and explain to her that you don't wish to discuss your reasons in a polite manner. That way she won't bother you to eat.

At your age I would suggest choosing a different method of fasting rather then food. At your age you need your food. There are other ways of fasting that are just as effective. You can give up one of your favourite foods such as sweets or popcorn etc. You can give up wearing jeans for a while and dress nice. You can give up television or playing video games or listening to music. There are all sorts of ways you can fast but you should choose one that is going to be tough for you to do. It should be something that hurts to give up. I think at least a month on this type of fasting is not unreasonable. Give up television or video games or your favourite food or wearing jeans or whatever... for a month.

Umm, don't fast. Actually, if you really want to, and you're such a religious Christian (which is based on Judaism), why don't you fast on Yom Kippor like Jews? That way, you've got you're bases covered. If you want to fast some other time, no more than one day. Otherwise, it can be very unhealthy.

What are the reasons for your fast and why should no one know about it?
If you are fasting to lose weight you are going about it the wrong way. You need to eat to lose weight...otherwise your metabolism slows down. And if you are 12 you shouldn't be dieting to lose weight you should be exercising....go out and play and get off the computer!

What is the purpose of your fasting, want to lose weight? If so, just cut down what you eat little by little.
