Because you can't play with all of them at once and if they are not put away then you will not be able to find them when you want to play the next time. Of course that's why parents want you to put them away, the children may want to put them away because if not the toy eating monster will come in at night and if he gets a taste of one toy, there better be more, if not he moves onto little boys and girls.......... Ok, no really that's sick don't tell him that LOL

When are you wanting to play with them?
If it's an appropriate time to play, as in, not bedtime or when you are supposed to be doing something else, then yeah, they should be put up so do you don't break your toys or your legs.
Don't fight with your parents over it and maybe they'll give you a cookie after dinner :D

Time to play and time to rest... when not playing should be in the box so other wouldnt trip over! Also, keep the toys in good condition.

I always told my sons that their toys wanted to be "in their home" while they weren't being played with. Every toy had his own, special home (aka the toy box or closet!) Try it, it may work!

well if its playtime and he wants to play with a toys, let him play with them, but if its not playtime and its time to do something else, he needs to understand that if he keeps the toys and room neatly cleaned he will have more fun playing next time he goes in there (besides that, it keeps toys from getting broken from being stepped on.)

Tell him/her that they need to be up out of the way so that if you need to get to them you need a clear path, and dont want to have to worry about tripping and falling over toys.

A lot of bad answers above. You have no obligation to rationalize with a kid that age on something so basic.
The answer is BECAUSE I SAID SO. He can figure it out later. At this point in life he follows directions. I don't mean to be ugly, but we gotta toughen up with the kids.

Parents want to teach their young ones responsibility at their young age. An added bonus is that the house will be organized, there's lesser occurence of accidents, and parents themselves will not be burned out trying to organize the home.

Because parents want you to have a clean room. Moms and dads hurt their feet when they step on your toys. They also don't want to break your toys. You don't want your toys broken, do you?
