An engagement ring for the guy is not traditional. Only a wedding ring.

Not really, but some wear a signet ring on the engagement finger. This can be plain or engraved with there initials. The nearest you can get to an engagement type ring is a stone set signet ring.

Not so much traditional no, but who actually cares about tradition anymore, really? Most people these days tend to make their own minds up about things, and don't let tradition influence their choices, it's called living in modern times, rather than dwelling in the past.
My b/f ASKED me to get him a ring when he gave me mine, he wants to wear one, it's his choice, so if that is what he wants then I see no wrong in that. My opinion is BE YOUR OWN PERSON and do what is right for you, don't follow the crowd like a sheep.

Naw. Guys tend to lose rings, anyway. At least the expensive ones. My husband still has the cheep $20 ring I got him when he lost his $250 wedding band, and the one I want to get him costs over $300.

A ring besides his wedding band is not necessary.
But if you want to make your own traditions go for it!
For me my wife spends money getting me cheap silver wedding bands that I keep losing because I hate wearing jewelry. I don't even own a watch. My real wedding band is kept safe with her.
