Gypsy is based on the life of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee (really!) The biggest part is actually "Mama Rose", her mother, who is a belter. (The part was originally sung by Ethel Merman, probably the greatest belter of all time.) The two girls, June and Louise, are lighter voices, and have a great deal of singing.

We did it when I was in high school, probably before you were born! These pages will help:

You should get the movie. Bette Midler did a remake of it for television and it's on DVD. It was made for television and they used the original sore and script as written. In fact all of the singing was filmed live and the original choreography by Jerome Robbins is intact this should give you a complete idea about the show and what it entails. Good Luck!
