When I rip a CD to MP3 format, at the highest quality rate in itunes the file size was 78MB, when ripped in WMP11 it was 130MB.
Is the quality the same with itunes having better encoding to a smaller sized file or does WMP11 have a greater capacity to rip higher quality mp3 with a trade off, of a larger file size?

If you want to rip to mp3, then you need WMP. Itunes by default rips to .m4a file format, which is a form of AAC (mp4). It will not be compatible with mp3 players. However, mp4 files are smaller for the same quality as mp3s. This is why I use Itunes for my music library, it's saving me 150MB.

Itunes CAN rip to mp3 format, though, although the quality will be mediocre... I'd stick to WMP for mp3 as Itunes is more dedicated to mp4 than mp3.

you would have to have the sense of hearing comparable with that of a dog in order to notice the difference in sound quality between the two. Just pick which ever one you find the easiest to work with.
