Anyway she wants if she helps do the work. Nothing better than encouraging self expression and taking part in the work and the satisfaction on completion. Allowing her to help, will also give her confidence to do these things as she gets older and not get set into a F/M role but look at things as "I can do anything". Something I think most parents want in their kids.

Reality is that no matter how much you may not like some choices in colour etc. It can always be changed later in life after she moves out, or gets tired of her current choices.

No. She should been able to participate but the ultimate decisions should be the parent's. The parent is the one paying to it. The parent is the one who has to do the work. The parents are also the ones who has to redo the room when she grows up or you move out of the house. And 12 year olds are 12 year olds, they aren't known for they rational thought, responsible behavior or unwavering decision making. The monkeys she wants hanging from a palm tree today will be needing a cost of paint to hide them in 14 months so unless you have bottomless pockets and are willing to spend money like water, a voice of reason needs to be applied before any decorating is done.

you could watch trading spaces boys vs. girls on the discovery kids channel or go to thier website to get your imagination going but you could hire a painter or paint it yourself(depends on how picky she is)and paint her room like a rainforest and paint the ceiling to give the trees a vanishing point so it makes them look very very tall

this would be an excellent opportunity for her to learn how to paint her room.

the whole ordeal about putting down drop cloths, taping up edges, putting up the first, second, and third coats will give her appreciation of her home and her future home.

my fiance got her first opportunity when she was 12 and she likes to paint every two years, and is an expert at it.

I let her decide how she wants to decorate... take her to pick out the paint/wallpaper whatever...it's her room and she's old enough to decide... I'd go for paint and posters though 'cause next year she'll probably be into something different.
