No. Polio still exists, though not in epidemic proportions that occurred in the USA in the early 1950's.
The only disease that has been eradicated from the general populace is smallpox. Today, the virus that causes smallpox exists only in cultures in carefully controlled laboratories.

The last case of polio in the United States was in 1979, it is hoped with better distribution of the vaccine it may be eradicated in the next decade worldwide. The doctor may have been correct about cases in the U.S. but not correct on a global scale I am afraid. The virus generally enters via the mouth and reproduces at that point before spreading to the pharynx and the gastrointestinal tract. Replication of the virus in the motor neurons and the brain stem is usually what ends up showing the classic polio symptoms Be well.

Six countries (Afghanistan, Egypt, India, Niger, Nigeria, and Pakistan) still have polio circulating, and the virus could be introduced to other countries. If the polio virus is imported into a country where not enough people have been immunized, there's the risk that it could spread from person to person. That's what has happened in some countries in Africa and Asia.

1763 cases reported by 5 December 2007, an increase from the previous year.
Only four countries in the world (Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan) are reported to have endemic polio. Cases in other countries are attributed to importation. Nigeria accounts for the majority of cases this year (to date) but India has reported more than ten times the number of cases this year as it had last year (30% of worldwide cases this year). Pakistan has reported 8 cases this year in children despite being given the polio medication.

Polio is supposed to be eliminated but so was TB and Measles, it's started again in countries even in North America where people have not been vaccinated against it. It is spread through droplets, ie someone sneezing or coughing at you when they are infected eve if they don't show symptoms.

No it's not eliminated.
You just don't hear of it because of the vaccine that was produced that so many have.
