He's someone i know, but don't get to see as much as i'd like anymore. We've talked some in the past and i liked our conversations, but i was never sure of how he felt.I tried a few times with emails, but maybe its just a lost cause or could he really be this painfully shy? what should i do without compromising my pride?

There really is no way to do it without awkwardness.
You just need to take a shot in the dark and go for it. You'll always wonder if you don't.

well, this should help you

Be sure he likes you! If he doesn't you'll end up with one broken heart and turn scarlett red due to shear embarrassment or, in some cases, rejection.
Ask his friends whether he likes different girls in your class(go down a list of girls to ask, e.g. Amanda, Laura, Magda, Phoebe etc.).
If you realize he may like you, slip hints(like a cook up a nice conversation on something simple, like homework on in a class), when you walk past him or when talking to him, brush against him 'accidentally'!
Further on, you need to give him a look. Hold the look for about 2 seconds, then look away. 3 seconds later repeat that step and then look at him 1 final time to see if he is looking back your way!
If you're sure he likes you, you can get a friend to tell him (preferably a friend who he has known for a while)
Be really nice to him and try to make something you bond over if he has a girlfriend stay away from him..
Start sitting next to him whenever you get the chance try to make something you two can bond over
Act confident around him.
Always believe him, unless it sounds kind of shady.
Don't try too hard... no guy likes a girl over-trying or desperate. Even if you are, play it 'cool-n-casual' and act laid back.

It will only be awkward if you make it so. Just be casual about it, just tell him, that you like him, and wondered if he likes you too.
Don't get all serious about it. If you are casual about it, so will he.
He may or may not like you, as much as he likes you, but at least you will know where you stand and can move on.
As to compromising your pride, what's that? You may get embarrassed, but that's about all. You will live through it, believe me.

Just try to flirt a little so he knows you like him but maybe if he's shy you could ask him if he wants to go out with you....

it's better when you both are relaxing and that's the best time
to come clean
bring it out as a joke then see how he reacts
if its just a joke to him then you know right

if you dont want to say it in person you could mail him a letter...
It'll make you feel less akward that you dont have to be there when he reads it
