It is cheap (corn subsidies & in the US sugar tariffs), stores better & is easier to transport & mix than sugar.
HFCS is worse for you than other sugars (glucose) because of the way the liver converts it into fatty acids at a faster rate than glucose.

Cause it's cheap, it acts the same way every single time you use it, unlike natural sweeteners like honey or molasses, and it has no distinctive flavor. It's also pretty bad for you, because your body does not react to it the same way as to plain sugar. But mostly cause it's cheaper for food manufacturers to use than plain sugar.

because like all sugars it's hygroscopic and as such helps products retain water and thereby deny water to micro-organisms. This hygroscopic property therefore increases shelf life.
