This is my 1st dog in life. He is already 12+ human years. Friends told me it is about time. I am kinda worried and sad to hear that. My dog is very healthy except the cherry eyes operation he had when he was 1 and that cost me $1000+. Other than that, perfect!
Recently I tried to run with him outside and noticed that he could only walk! Should I prepare and ..... :( ????? He sleeps at home all the time (looks depressed to me). Would a new little Spaniel cheer him up a little? Will that help usually? PLease share your experience with your COCKER SPANIEL with me? Thanks

Well, I just groomed a 15 year old Cocker today, and hes in pretty good shape. I guess it really depends on well they are taken care of, of course problems do arise that is no faullt of owner. Just figure anywhere frome 10 to 17. Theres nothing wrong with getting a new little one. If your dog is healthy why would they say its time?? You make that choice on your own. You will know when the time comes.

Your cocker could live to be around 12-13 yrs old. His running days are over due to his age, please don't expect him to do that anymore. And nonononono a little spaniel would NOT cheer him up. If you were old and not feeling as perky as you used to would you want a yappy, hyper, bouncing off the wall kid all over you? Give your cocker all the love you can, he isn't depressed, he is aging and probably feeling his age. Take him to the vets to make sure his arthritis isn't very painful, there are great meds for that. Don;t let him suffer as he ages, when its time to go, be with him and know that you gave him the bst life possible.

I come from a big cocker spaniel family. My oldest one lived to be 16.
If he has trouble getting around he needs arthritis care! This is Extremely common in the older dogs. There is great medication you can get from your vet (I use Metacam, and Synovi G3) Your vet will be able to advise you what is best for your boy. I bet you'll be surprised how much younger your dog seems when his joints are feeling better. Also at this age he should have a blood panel done at least yearly to screen for problems (many can be treated with early intervention and add Quality years to your pets life). Frankly it sounds as if he's doing great to me, keep up the good work and pamper him well in his old age. You're quite lucky not to be plagued with skin problems

I've had cockers all my life and I'm sorry but it is usually 12-13 years.Sometimes they will live until 14.Have you taken him to the vet?He may have a low thyroid production or something else may be going on.Rarely does a new puppy help it just tires them out faster, and if he's used to it being you and him he may feel like your trying to replace him. You'd be suprized how animals think and feel.

My mother in law's cocker lived until he was about 17. He may just be feeling his age and not want to run and play like he did as a puppy.
