Good question. Depends entirely on context. If you go into a Waffle House diner, they're entirely likely to say, "it'll be a few minutes, honey", and it's nothing but pure friendliness. But using an overly familiar form of address, even a first name, can be very rude too. Depends I think on how it's meant.

This happens on occasion to me because I work almost exclusively with men 10 to 15 years older than I am. It doesn't really mean anything and once they see that I am very good at my job they show me great respect. It really isn't a big deal. I try to always help if I see someone in need. Older women often call me Sweetheart or Good girl. Why would I be offended?

Not really...maybe because I am bad about doing it.
I am bad about remembering names so I just call people "hon" or "sweetie"
Of course my hubby doesnt like I but old habit dies hard and he knows I dont mean much by it.
I also work with kids so it reinforces the habit. However in this day and age, with lawsuits popping up all the time, I will eventually get arrested for this I am sure.

I don't really mind, I think it's an interesting change of events. Not a lot of people do this in the first place, so I would laugh and thank them. Normally, only workers do this not random strangers that come up to you for no reason. So it's ok for me.

I wouldn't. My husband used to yell at me b/c as a waitress I would address everyone as "hon" male or female and he said it was disrespectful. He comes from a generation before mine though and to him it may seem so but now I don't see how it could be. I hate it now when kids call me "ma'am". That makes me feel old.
Positive words like those you mentioned should only be construed as a compliment.

no you should never be offended when a person no matter who it is uses an adjective that positively describes or compliments your physical characteristics or personality . they are just trying to be kind. they are not in anyway trying to be offenisve to you. you should only be offended if the say someting about you in a negative way in wich you must defend yourself. unless if they begin harassing you....at which point you still shouldn't be offended by their compliments but offended by the fact they are harassing you.
in short answer......no they are being kind and not talking about you in a negaitve way. they are just using adjectives to describe you. if they say "hey, beautiful." they just think you are beautiful. theres nothing offensive about that is there.
well beautiful, thats all i have to say. lol

It doesn't bother me, but when someone does that to me on the phone I always respond in kind. Like if someone calls me "dear" then I will do the same to them. But if it is someone I know, I always figure they cannot remember my name! Some guys call all the ladies they know the same pet name, which makes me think they also don't want to mix up names!

Yes, I would be offended. It's not easy being beautiful. I want to be respected and want people to like me for who I am on the inside, not for my physical appearance.

Its better than being called sasquash. Who doesn't like being innocently flirted with? Would you rather they say nothing and just stare at your chest? BUT It may not be acceptable where respect should be. Like if it comes from your boss, or you say it to your boss... or a cop. That may be offensive.
