Obviously, a shelter would be any animal lovers first suggestion, but to be truthful, when you get a dog from a shelter, you also get it's past problems (if any). Be careful when choosing.
Pet stores are rough.. some aren't as reputable as others and acquire their dogs from puppy mills which typically overbreed their dogs and neglect their health.
Backyard breeders are so so.. try to get references from friends to make sure of their lifestyle and how well they may treaqt their pets/kids.
Breeders are normally the best way to go, although pricey and not the best animal rescue friendly idea, it's the safest bet for a healthy pet.
Good luck!

The shelter is a terrific way to find a wonderful dog.
I have found great dogs there that were extremely smart and well trained. A cockapoo and a Briard mix.
A back yard breeder supplied me with my best dog to date.
Scottie.
A breeder sold me a dog that has some health issues but nothing major. He is also a very good dog. Scottie
I have even bought a puppy at a pet store and had that work out fine, but I would rank this one last. Samoyed
The most important thing is that you take good care of whatever dog you choose from wherever you purchase.
Wishing you and your new pal a wonderful New Year.

If you want a purebred dog with AKC papers, then go with a breeder. If you want a mix, or possibly a purebred that doesn't have a paper trail, then go with a shelter. There are many dogs there that need great homes!
I would not recommend either a backyard breeder or a pet store. I'll skip the whole lecture on exactly why. In short, the quality and health of the dog would be very questionable, and you would be supported a very bad industry with your dollars.

You need to be leery of the back yard breeder or pet store. Some of these dogs could have come from puppy mills and may be sick. My first two dogs came from a reputable breeder and the last one is from the shelter. All were GREAT!! You do need to be cautious with the animals from the shelter because you may be "inheriting" someone Else's problem.

A shelter is best because you are saving a life. Second choice is a breeder if you can find a reliable one (ask around for recommendations). Stay away from back yard breeders and pet stores.

certified bet tech here . owning a pet is up to the individual. now depending on the breed and type . think about what you would do with the dog and costs as well. getting a quality full bread dog from a breeder is tricky and costly , you need to make sure the breeder is up front and honest . most pure breads that are small have bone problems and health issues and need to see the vet more often then not . now mixed breeds are perfect i think . i would start off with a shelter dog and then if you want a pure go from there , but pet store puppies are iffy . due to there enviorment. and always go with your gut instinct with animals and breeder if you feel something is not right then your proably right .

Most pet stores get their dogs from breeders (I think) any way, most breeders are in it for the money and not the health of the animals, so they over breed their dogs, I know that most dogs rescued from a shelter are great - guess they feel you saved their lives and want you to keep them and love them, so I would choose a shelter dog.

It's relly your choice and what you can afford. But I will tell you from personal experience that When I worked in a pet shop we purchased the puppies from breeders at minimal cost-required the breeder to have proof of vet care -shots-wormings and then the cost of the puppy went up from (for instance) $100 to $599.So from knowing that my personal choice would be shelter,or breeder(reputable)

Nix on the petstore and backyard breeder cuz they don't know what the heck they're doing! It really depends on if you want a mixed breed or a purebred dog. If a purebred dog is what you're looking for, find a reputable breeder for that breed of dog and get it. If you want a mixed breed, go to a nice shelter and rescue one.
Good luck either way.
