I have a tabby cat, 9 years old, he's just a basic house cat (domestic short hair?) He's gotten a bit overweight since his last vet visit, so the vet hasn't seen him like this. We feed him when ever he's hungry, but it's never been a problem.
If I play with him for a while each day, and only feed him twcie a day, will it hurt him at all?

We feed all our cats twice a day and they are just fine. If you have been feeding him more because he "asked" for food, you probably have over fed him. He can and will adjust to the twice daily routine. Any time you can play with your cat or give it attention is always good.

Overweight cats aren't in as much danger of complications as dogs and humans, but if it gets to out of hand it can cause problems because cats,by nature, are very active. Playing with him a lot would help, maybe spring for a harness and a leash to take him for walks once a day. You should probably not spring this new thing on him at once. He won't know how to react to no more food 24/7. It could hurt him. leave the food out but don't fill the bowl up as much. Then once you have noticed a little change in weight(for the better) start taking the food away. Put it out when you wake up in the morning and once it is gone take it away until you get home from work or school, then put it back. If your cat starts to act out of the ordinary, take him to the vet.

Switch to feeding him twice a day. That's what I've done with my cat for 14 years now. If you feel bad about not feeding him so often, you could always give him a few treats once or twice a day. That's how we taught my cat a treat so whenever she's hungry enough to do it, she gets a little food. Just don't feed him all the time.

Oh God no!!! If he's over weight, that won't hurt him either. If he's over 14 lbs, then I'd put him on a diet, with exercise.
It won't hurt him at all, it's actually better for him. I'd feed him 3 times a day, with half a can of wet food, with about a cup of a diet, or other healthy, dry food.
Feeding whenever they're hungry isn't really healthy for any animal. If you really think about it, wild animals don't get to eat whenever they want. they miss an animal on the hunt, or they don't have enough animals to hunt, and they are pretty healthy.

You should only be feeding him twicw a day any way. I always have dry food out for the cats so they can munch away and keep their teeth and gums health. Twice a day I add a little "wet" cat food to the mix. No fat cats in this house!

A cat at that age its normal for it to be or look overweight, cats are different than most animals they eat when they need to. With my cats I would leave a large bowl big enough for a few days seeing they ate hard catfood. They would eat smaller amouts and come back when they felt the need.

No, that sounds pretty reasonable. I feed my cats about 1/4 cup of food twice a day and they look great. They're both about 10lbs.

No, not at all. Make sure you know how mich you're giving him. Cats can have a problem if they eat whenever they want, just like peoples shouldn't eat snacks continuously all day. ^^;; Good luck!
