Thanks!

Use liquid ivory soap mixed in a pan with water in place of dog shampoo. Our vet recommended it to use on our golden retriever because he had an inherited skin disease and it made his skin and fur terrific in about two weeks. Dont use anything but that though, because ivory is the most mild. HOPE THIS HELPS!!

The BEST thing to use for the dry, itchy, flakey skin would be an unscented castille (olive oil) soap. It is gentle, it does not strip the natural oils, and it will not irritate the skin any further than it already is. You may also add a bit of olive oil to the food that you feed them, but not alot or you will end up with undesirable results (not being able to make it outdoors to potty). Avoid bathing the dog more often than 1 time per month, brush often to remove all underfur and irritants that could be hiding in the fur. Good luck.

Oatmeal shampoo baths once a month. Then Petsmart sells a product called Linatone it is a food supplement. It helps a great deal with dry, itchy, flakey skin.

Diet is probably the cause. Try feeding Canidae, it is available at pet supply stores, not the grocery store. Anything you feed from the grocery store is not quality food. Also, you might want to add some salmon oil to her food, about a half teaspoon three times a week. You can get salmon oil at the pet supply also. I adopted a 10 month old sheltie with awful skin and coat. He was on Purina. After 4 months on Canidae and salmon oil he was a completly different dog! Even my vet could not believe the transformation. Also, you should not bath your dog too much, that will only make her skin dryer. Keep baths down to one or two a month. Good luck.

feed it omega fatty acid 3 6 (some has 9) supplements. Like flax seed oil, fish oil, olive oil, etc. It is good for the skin and coat.

Do not bath too much, because you are removing the natural oil layer which protects the skin from bacteria and fungi attacks.

And follow the oatmeal shampoo advices.

It could be his food, so switch to something like the foods at http://www.frrco.com/121668 It seems more expensive, but you feed less and it comes shipped free. It is formulated with quality ingredients to help with skin and coat conditions.

Also, do not bathe him to often as this will dry out the skin. When you do give him a bath, use an oatmeal shampoo, or one formulated for dry skin.

Changing his food and bathing schedule should help!

I have had success with coal tar based shampoos and high quality oatmeal shampoo.

In the meantime, ttry Avoderm, it has avocado oils and really helps condition my dogs skin. It comes in a pump spray bottle.
It stops the itching and flaking immediately upon using it.
Smells nice tool

Supplements will help over time.

Ifi your dog already has dry skin, the LAST thing you want to do is give him a bath and dry his skin and coat out even more!!!

Give your dog veg. oil on his food daily (depending on size 1 tablespoon to 1 teaspoon), or better yet, a salmon oil capsule every day. His skin (and coat) will be in great condition in a short time.

Oatmeal shampoo is a good idea for sensitive skin.. if you find that doesn't work, it could be a deeper allergy related problem. Another suggestion would be a hypoallergenic shampoo, or a prescription shampoo from your vet. Good luck!

what type of shampoo are you using on them? That might be drying his/her skin. Ask your local Vet they might suggest something great. Good Luck with that
