I have a miniature pinscher (I think I spelled that right) mix, and he eats everything! I alwways try my best to put stuff up, but he always manages to get to it.

My parents really don't care about it, unless he does something that makes them mad, but if he does something naughty, they'll leave it up to me.

Apparently, my year old puppy got into a pack of gum and ate the WHOLE thing. It was out of the plastic wrapper but he got into the cardboard box thing. What do I do? I don't know if he ate the wrapper or just the gum or all of it, and I'm scared he's not going to be able to eat, or be really constipated.

I just walked out to the living room and saw the empty box on the floor and asked my dad. My dad simply replied with "I dunno *shrug* shoulda put it away"

Just keep an eye on him. If he starts to act sick get your parents to call the vet. I never heard of gum as being a problem. The sugar in it should help it pass. The only problem I ever heard of with gum is in the hair. But, always call a vet if in doubt.

The cardboard isn't an issue, it'll be digested pretty easily if it doesn't contain plastic.

The gum may cause constipation, so monitor the puppy's drinking and eating patterns and make sure he stays hydrated. If you notice constipation try giving a little bit of milk in a saucer or a little bit of mashed up pumpkin (baby food) to help move the bowel along.

If the problem persists for more than 2 days, call your vet, an enema or stomach pump may be needed. Good luck!

First off, is it sugar free gum? Xylitol, a sugar substitute has been shown to be toxic in dogs and cause severe problems. check the package, if it has Xylitol call your vet ASAP.

If it is regular gum the odds are it will pass on its own, monitor your puppy and if there is a problem contact your vet (vomiting, etc).

If you cannot supervise your puppy it is best to put it in a crate or penned into a room where it cannot get into stuff. This is typical puppy behavior and they cannot be left unsupervised.

I've raised alota dogs in my days and they will(puppies)eat about anything. Its been my experience if the dog seems ok , breathing well (not labored), walking around like its normal self it will probably be ok I've had puppies swallow all kids of toys. Keep an eye on it for the next few days it'll probably be ok. If it seems sick or tired alot or winne or fever or cant have a bowle movement then you need to take it to the vet immediately. Best of luck!

I would call a vet and ask. They'll probably tell you to watch the dog and make sure it "goes" in the next 24hrs. If it doesn't, then it might have a blockage (due to the gum). Chances are it'll pass... but do try to keep stuff like that out of reach in the future. I know how it goes though. I have a cat that insists on eating hair ties (the terrycloth ponytail ones!). No matter WHERE we put them... he gets them! Amazingly, they always seem to pass... but I fear he has expensive vet bills in his future!

Well it seems you have a bored dog.

You need to start if you already don't, walking him everyday for about 30 minutes. (mornings best) This way his energy is drained and he will be less likely to resort to that behavior.

Also you should think about buying him toys that he can play with. If you catch him with something he shouldnt have then what you should do is simply make him drop it for you. Take the object he shouldnt have and replace it with one of his toys (ie a bone or anything else he can chew on)

You obviously need to practice leadership with your dog. He believes that he is the owner of your house and that everything in it is his and this is why he freely eats whatever he wants in the house. What I want you to do is practice leadership in your house with him. You have to show him you own everything in the house to show him you are pack leader and he is not.

So you need to claim everything. Dont let him on the couch unless he is invited and dont let him have things he shouldnt take them away from him by making him drop them and then to claim it as yours place it near him and tower over it. Dont let him near it and correct him when he does by using your hand as a mouth and firmly strike at him when he comes close. (this is what dogs would do to others to claim things as their own.) If you don't know what I mean by that then you should tune into Dog Whisperer with Ceasar Millan on the National Geographic channel.

With this you should be able to get rid of your dogs behavior, but you cant to it without your parents. They need to correct him whenever he has something he shouldnt or he will never get it in his mind.

Best of luck to you! And I wouldnt worry about the gum he ate! He should be able to pass it within the next 24 hours. If you notice him not eating or drinking then you need to take him to the vet.

Just watch him. You could call the vet and explain what happened and see what they say. He will probably be okay. You should always keep things put up out of a dog's reach because they will chew up anyything.

chewing gum as a rule will play havoc with a small breed dog's intestine.however such a small amount would not usualy be harmful...keep an eye on his/her toilet and eating habits.should pass in about 3 days

Unfortunately, you need to get your dog to the vet ASAP. If your gun had xylitol in it (a common sweetener in gums) that can be very dangerous, even fatal for the dog. It can affect the liver and its function. Go to the vets NOW, please, for the love of your dog.
