Probably because she wasn't telling you the truth. Probably does not want to lose your friendship but doesn't know how tell you you're just friends. Have a heart to heart, don't hold it against her if she fumbled, she probably didn't want to hurt you.

I am going through the same thing. i have been friends with this guy since middle school (I'm 27) and we decided to start seeing eachother but I am backing off because I realized we are better off as friends but I don't have the courage to tell him. I love him and don't want to hurt him but I can't seem to feel the way he wants me to feel about him. Maybe she feels the same.
