I have a Pentium III 500 Mhz computer that runs on windows xp. I just added more RAM and disabled all the fancy visual effects and unnecessary startup items in xp to make it run faster.

OK, the computer may run slow with wndows XP but, at least it runs. I had windows ME as well and all I can remember was the Blue Screen of Death about every other day and usually when I was in the middle of a paper. So, Windows ME may take up less resources but it is also historically the most unstable version of windows ever. What you gain in speed of the operating system you may likely lose in trying to reconstruct lost data and/or rebooting your system.

And, the problem isn't with your hard drive but with your processor and RAM. Increase those and you'll see a huge difference.

The computer was designed when ME was the "new" operating system, which happens every couple of years. I think ME was a slightly better version of 98SE and had extremely good luck with it. XP, an absolute stinker unless you pay twice as much for the OEM, is more problematic because, yes, it takes more RAM and is two steps ahead your friend's computer. Windows 2000 is a good better step up and runs on 98/ME's FAT 32 file structure OR NTFS, which is XP's type. Depending on what your friend does with his computer, it may be necessary to upgrade in order to run XP.

Yuck. It's time for a new computer anyway.
ME is the worst operating system in the galaxy (and far beyond that). It was worse than Windows 3.1 and the cavemen built better tools. I am a WIndows ME naysayer. Upgrade to 512mb ram, or wait til Jan. 30th when Vista comes out.

Absolutely YES. This computer, as is, is extremly low for XP.

You need to update so many components for XP that I recommend buy a Windows vista capable system.

The problem is that if you have changed the filesystem to NTFS, go back to FAT32 requires formating the hard disk, or use of Partition Magic.
