Hi there!

You need to use Ziploc Freezer Bags. These are the cheapest alternative than buying a good quality pastry bag.

My students use the freezer bags when we make Gingerbread houses at school and we use thick royal icing which doesn't split the bag open. They cut open a small hole in one corner of the bag and it is cheap especially when they are 30 kids! One year I tried the cheap brand that were not freezer bags and they kept splitting open.

Come to think of it, since you seem to use pastry bags often, why not invest in a good quality pastry bag? My mom bought one for about $15 CAN. Not only are they made of sturdier plastic (vinyl) material, but they offer a variety of different "nibs" that you can change to create different shapes and textures for your cookies!

Good luck & Happy baking! :)

I use a cloth pastry bag with a specially fitted tip. A zip lock bag is usually a good substitute, but will not work if the mixture you are trying to pipe through it is too stiff.

When using a plastic bag; release extra air out of the bag before closing/sealing....and gently apply pressure to have an slow even flow.

You can always double up the bags for added strength !!

I have a commercial pastry bag and what a pain to wash!! I rather have the disposable ones.

Attempt things and learn from your mistakes. Just because something doesn't work for one person doesn't mean it won't work for another.

I have too many tips... This answer would look more like a book... ha ha !! : )

Hmm, I use ziplocks too and never had any problems. Maybe the mixture is too thick?

I used to have a real pastry bag, but those things are a b**** to clean. I used to have to wash those at a restaurant.

You may be filling them too full or squeezing to tightly.
