How come everybody veiws the veil worn by muslim women as opressive? Don't you people know that the Jewish and Christian faiths also require women's hair to be covered. Jewish women in Israel always cover their hair, and only wear skirts. And if you read the bible closley, there is a passage ( I forgot where exactly) where it says that only a "shameful" or "damned" woman would show her hair. So why all the disrespect toward muslim women in general?

and yes they (orthodox jewish women) do cover their hair and aren't allowed to wear pants only skirts. i would know because I actually lived in Israel for many years. I am trying to ask why Islam is labled opressive towards women just because they are required to cover their heads, where it IS the same for women in Judiasm and Christianity. And a women's hair is not the cover I am referring to.

People saw weired stuff when they don't understand anothers culture. They judge before they do reasearch. I'm Chrisian and I don't cover my hair. I think that was one of the old rules they changed awhile back.

Your analogy is flawed.
Having hair covered and wearing a skirt is not the same as the full outfit where only eyes are exposed. A better comparison would be between the head covering that just covers the hair and neck and what you are comparing it to.

And, although you partially clarified yourself, you are not 100% accurate when it comes to Jewish women.

It is MANY (not all) Married (not unmarried) Orthodox Jewish women worldwide (not just in Israel) who cover their hair, either through a kercheif, hat, snood, or wig.

that passage that you can't remember is in the old testament. the new says that a woman's hair is her covering.

i think it is viewed as oppressive because people don't think that women have any choice. i don't know very much about muslims, only what i've seen on t.v. it seems like women are at the mercy of their men. maybe it isn't like that everywhere. maybe it isn't islam itself but certain countries.

Why is it that people don't read the Bible yet they think they are experts. I think I was around 10 when I was told of the cultural differences in the Bible which were forgotten about years ago.

Probably this is because most christians and jews have left the middle ages and wear normal, practical clothing. While muslim women seem to be stuck in their own medieval repression.
