Our cat is front declawed, and about once every month we trim his back claws.. It takes two people to do this, one to hold the cat and one to do the trimming.

I was told by a vet to never touch back claws especially if a cat is front declawed. They need some type of protection.I think (I have 4 cats myself)that you should take the cat to vet since maybe the cat is hurting or has a hurt claw and is trying to get it out or showing you it has pain.

My cats have all their claws... but I do keep them trimmed/clipped. I just use fingernail clippers (I find it easier than animal clippers). My cats are all used to it, but some cats don't like it, so you might need help (someone to hold the cat while you clip). Just make sure not to clip too far... if you hit the qwik it will bleed, plus it will cause pain making it difficult to do in the future (animals have amazingly good memories!). By clipping, it makes their claws less damaging, and it's also safer for them. When nails are too long/sharp they can get caught in carpet, furniture, etc. and cause sprains and even breaks in the toes or legs (if the cat freaks out when it gets stuck on something).

You can buy a special set of clippers for your cat's back claws. You can get your vet to show you the proper way to do it, it's not difficult at all. Or, if you don't feel comfortable, you can usually find a groomer in the area who will clip your cats nails for you for a small fee. You can also get nail "caps" they can be glued on over the cats nails, the cat can still scratch itself when it's itchy, and the nails usually don't bother the cat. These have to be replaced every 3 or 4 months depending on the cat, and are about 40 dollars. The only place I have found them are in one of the pet clinics in my area.

My 2 are declawed on the front only. Every now and then I clip their back claws, but sometime when they are asleep on my lap I will file their back claws. I tell them they are getting a pedicure and they are ok with it.

Yes; your vet can trim its back claws. Trimming nails is important because thy can get to long and curl causing ingrown nails. If you have never trimmed an animals claws before i discurage you try to. Ask your vet to show you how to do it.

Declawing is the only answer. If you are afraid they won't be able to climb don't worry they can still climb to get away from predators etc.
