I think he went to preach to all the dead people so they could have the opportunity to be saved by his blood. I don't think the devil is lounging around hell torturing people. In the book of Job it says he goes to and fro throughout the earth. I'm sure any demons that might have been there probably ran for there lives when Jesus showed up.

sure, that's portion of the apostles creed. it really is a sequence of foundational truths that each and each and every one Christians might want to carry to, in the journey that they are really Christian. The note 'hell' is somewhat deceptive- Jesus descended into Hades, the position of the useless. there have been 2 'waiting places'- one became hades, the different became paradise. Jesus descended into Hades, and preached to the souls that were there. this manner they could not say that they did not have an threat to maintain on with Him. The e book of Acts tells us that Jesus ascended, correct in the front of the disciples. it isn't stated typically- yet we basically had a sermon on it very last Sunday- Jesus can fly! The Bible says that the disciples stood there searching into the sky, until eventually ultimately an angel appeared and requested, "Why are you nonetheless searching on the sky? he will go back an same way He left".

This is an areas where we do not have a lot of information. Those who die without the lord are certainly in a place of torment and will certainly go to hell, but no one is there yet. Satan has never been there and does not want to go. In the end times, after each person comes before the judgement seat of Almighty God-- his eternal fate is proniunced-- not based on how good or bad a person he was in life, but based on whether he claimed and trusted the salvation offered by the Son of God. If he DID that in life, then the evidence of it is that good works followed. Buut there will be some, like the thief on the cross who lived terrile lives, yet trusted in the end and their souls will be just as saved as those of the "good" people. God makes the rules.

I don't know if the Bible ever says that Jesus went to Hell. When the Bible says that Jesus preached to the spirits in prison, there are a few different interpretations of that verse. The atonement was accomplished on the cross, not in Hell. If Jesus ever went down into Hell, it was not for atonement but to declare victory to the people in Hell. The atonement was accomplished on the cross. Satan and his demons are not in Hell, they are roaming around the Earth tempting people, but they know that their time is short because Jesus defeated them on the cross and satan and the demons will be cast into eternal punishment at the final judgement. www.equip.org

The word “hell” is found in many Bible translations. In the same verses other translations read “the grave,” “the world of the dead,” and so forth. Other Bibles simply transliterate the original-language words that are sometimes rendered “hell”; that is, they express them with the letters of our alphabet but leave the words untranslated. What are those words? The Hebrew she’ohl′ and its Greek equivalent hai′des, which refer, not to an individual burial place, but to the common grave of dead mankind; also the Greek ge′en·na, which is used as a symbol of eternal destruction. However, both in Christendom and in many non-Christian religions it is taught that hell is a place inhabited by demons and where the wicked, after death, are punished (and some believe that this is with torment).

Jesus did not descend to hell. He went to the spirits in prison - which could mean a holding place.
Satan will not go to hell, but be thrown into the lake of fire(which is different from hell where the rich man went-parable of Lazarus- which is eternal separation from God.). Descriptions of hell in the Bible can be confusing.

There are three Greek words that are translated as "hell" in English. Two of these words are used most often, the third is used only once I think.
The two words used most often have different meanings.
One means hell as we think of it, the place of punishment, the place prepared for the devil and his followers.
The other means the realm of the dead. This is the word that is used in relation to Jesus. It simply means he left the living world and entered the world of the dead. It simply means he died. It does not mean he went to the place of punishment.

Jesus descended into sheol (hades)(the bossom of Abraham) (rested with his fathers) ONLY MOMENTARILY.
He then took the captives that were there (those on the good side of sheol with Abraham) and took them into captivity up to heaven to be with Him there. Some of the people trapped in sheol were actually raised to life durring the transitioning power flux and walked the streets of Jerusalem and surrounding areas.
Keep reading your Bible, and pray for wisdom.
And by the way, the devil is not in sheol right now, he's walking the earth.

The word hell to first century Jews meant nothing more then THE GRAVE!
The idea of hell being a place of torment and suffering is a modern twist on an ancient fable! The reality is THERE IS NO HELL! THERE IS NO HEAVEN! THERE IS NO SATAN! THERE IS NO GOD!
