The Nicene Council at the request of Constantine - history

Peace!
The Bible we quote came from the Catholic Church. Before Martin Luther, all Christendom used only one Bible - the Catholic
Bible translated in Latin from the original languages by St. Jerome.
"It was by the apostolic Tradition that the Church discerned which writings are to be included in the list of sacred books. This complete list is called the canon of Scripture. It includes 46 books for the Old Testament (45 if we count Jeremiah and Lamentations as one) and 27 for the New." - Catechism of the Catholic Church, 120

The Bible teaches that Scripture is inspired by God.The books of the Old Testament were accepted by Jesus as Scripture and referred to as Scripture by him and by his early followers. Ezra may have been the first to collect and recognize the Old Testament as Scripture in the 5th Century B.C.

The original disciples accepted some writings as inspired by God and sent them out to the various churches. Others were clearly rejected as heretical and contrary to the teachings of accepted Scripture.

The Council of Carthage, 397, made a list of books that were accepted as the New Testament. Here are the standards that were used to decide if writings in the first century after Christ were Scripture: 1) Did it claim to be inspired by God? 2) Did it have significant spiritual content? 3) Was it written or backed by an Apostle--an original follower of Jesus? 4) Was it accepted by the early church as Scripture--by those who were alive when Jesus was alive?

God Bless.

Constantine legitimized the practice, but it was the Council of Nicea that compiled and edited the Bible.
