I breed Shih Tzus, so I prefer them. However, both dogs are really wonderful dogs.

Yorkie's are a very expensive breed. At pet stores they run around $1400, and that's a lot cheaper than a breeder would sell for. They have a lot less health issues than Shih Tzu's though.

Some Yorkies are prone to bronchitis and early tooth decay, poor tolerance of anaesthetic, and delicate digestion. Exotic treats should be avoided. They sometimes suffer paralysis in the hindquarters caused by herniated disks and other problems of the spine. Falls or knocks can cause fractures of fragile bones. Abnormal skull formations in Yorkies measuring less then 8 inches (20cm). Females often have trouble delivering. The very tiny "teacup" Yorkies often have serious health and behavioral problems. Be sure to feed Yorkies dry food (canned food can be added) to help keep their teeth clean and strong. They should get their teeth cleaned at the Vet to keep them from falling out and creating infection.

A shih tzu runs around $799-$899 in my area at a pet store.. They tend to have more health problems than Yorkie's because of their smooshed noses. They tend to wheeze and snore. Some bloodlines are prone to ear, eye and respiratory problems. Spinal disc disease caused by a long back and short legs may be a problem. Their teeth need regular veterinary attention, as they tend to be lost early. These dogs gain weight easily and should not be overfed.

Personally, I prefer Yorkie's over shih tzu's because of the way they look, but it all depends on the personality of the pup. Good luck!

A Shih Tzu. They're easier to take care of. My aunt's friend owns a Shih Tzu, and he's very nice. He rarely barks and he's very well-behaved and doesn't bite.
Yorkies are A LITTLE harder to take care of. They get cavities easily, they're stubborn, and housebreaking(potty-training) is very hard for them.

They are both so cute it is next to impossible to decide no?

Anyway, I think that yorkies are cool. Shih tzus kind of have an annoying bark to me but they are still really cute.

If you are planning on getting a dog you would have to decide which is better for you. I like yorkies.

I had a wonderful shih ztu that deid in October, and he was extremely affectionate, and behaved well with children, but that was mainly because of how my family raised him. He was very sweet, and very happy, and liked to snuggle, and play tug of war, even when he got older.
