Make sure you have something solid in your stomach beforehand. Giving or having blood drawn on a completely empty stomach is not a good thing. Take something with you to distract you such as an MP3 player and listen to some favorite music. Also, look away and take slow deep breaths while they take the blood. After they are finished stay calm and maintain your breathing. If you feel faint let the nurse know...they can give you some juice to get your blood sugar back up and help you get into a better position to get the blood flowing again.

It only takes a minute or two and it will be over before you know it. Just remember to keep breathing and distract yourself.

GOOD LUCK :-)

LOOK AWAY!
the first few times i had it done, i could not keep my hand still knowing what she was gonna do. it seemed like reflex to me to move it so she couldn't do that! lol. but seriously at some point i would tell them, i need to have my hand/arm resting on something, and not to do it until i looked away. although my issues were not about the sight of blood or needles, i still think this would help you too. good luck.

I've had to do this several times. Just look away and don't look back at your arm until you're done. Try eating a piece of candy while they're doing it.

remember this IS NOT an injection withdrawing blood is nothing like an injection!!! with the (butterfly) size of the needles they use now you probably won't even feel the prick of it!

You sound exactly like my husband. Geez, its just a small needle. It only pinches for a second, and they only take a small amount of blood. You'll be ok,... just take a deep breath and dont look. The nurse gave my husband a sticker for his lunchbox, maybe they'll give you one too. lol. ( he was 40 yrs old)
