First go through and get rid of everything that you haven't used in a year. If you haven't used it in the past year you obviously don't need it. Once that is done it is easier to rearrange what you have left-the stuff you actually use. There are many types and styles of shelf and drawer type plastic units available at Walmart for organizing and storing out of season stuff.

Make 3 different sections with your things.........
KEEP DONATE TOSS
THEN the items you are keeping, sort into areas with like items. Place them in baskets, clear containers, shelves, etc. You can get storage containers that fit under the bed too,and that gives you lots of storage space. Also rearrange how the furniture is placed, giving yourself lots of floor space. You didn't say if this is a bedroom, living room or what, but am "assuming" it is a bedroom you are talking about. Also, you can make lots of room in a closet too with the new organizers they have for sale. Good luck

Get yourself a few big garbage bags and begin sorting out what's junk and what can be donated.Go through you closet/dresser/book shelves. You will be amazed at what you can eliminate.Oh hey and dont forget about cleaning the room...be sure to clean under the bed.
Start with moving the small stuff and work your way up.If you are worried about the way things will fit in your room, be sure to measure things before you move them.....have fun!

Go to the dollar store and buy little plastic bins and baskets. Those work well to store things in.

old wooden crates are excellent, you can stack, paint, hang a curtain over the front, put hooks on the sides, cut them to size,
