You have to wipe the hard drive all together, save files on a back up disk that you want to keep and then wipe it clean. Not all files will disappear some times, some just ... stay (I've had to wipe mine a few times and that always happens) but they are usually system files that can't be erased easily. Okay, this will be the complicated part. After wiping it you have to reload the windows software and anything else you want on it, games, files, music, so on. The whole process may take a while depending on how much you want to reinstall. If it still isn't as fast as you want even after wiping it all out and starting over you might check into how much memory you have or if you don't want to buy more memory you can set it to defragment on a weekly schedule for any time that you aren't using it and it can just clean out any little bits on it's own. To defrag you go into my computer, then control panel and find a file named something about schedules tasks. If you don't have a disk clean up in there already to activate you use the add task button and follow wizard directions that come with Microsoft. Good luck, computers can be tricky.

I've done this before and in order for it to work, you have to make sure you are using the original cd's that came with the computer. It will reboot everything completely as brand new, the only time it will keep anything is if you want it to. Try it again and pay close attention to what it asks you. You should be able to completely wipe out everything on there. Good luck.

You have to wipe the hard drive clean (i.e. delete the C drive) and start over from scratch. It's a lot of work, but was well worth it for me. I would not have attempted it if I did not have an external hard drive to move the files to. That was for just in case....I re-installed all of the programs from the original CDs.

Redo the install. When the install starts specify that you want to reformat the drive. This will wipe the drive clean so make sure you have a copy of everything you want saved on another drive.

first, backup anything you want to keep.

second, format your hard drive (this will erase everything)

third, partion your empty hard drive

forth, install the windows xp operating system

fifth, install Microsoft office

sixth, install your anti-virus/spyware and firewall (if your not using windows firewall) it only take a moment online to catch more junk than a drunken sailor

seventh, install your other programs (if you have more than one media player you should install your main one; windows media player for example, last so the other players don't change your file type associations.)

you will need to format your hard drive. This will remove everything on your computer. If you put in your windows Cd, it should probably give instructions or do it for you.
