I'm needing to buy a car in the nashville area and I saw this ad. $1,000 for this 1990 Saab 9000 CD, 4 door sedan with tan leather interior. Power everything, sun roof, AMFM with CD player, heated seats. One of the safest cars you can buy. Very good shape. Low miles--- 143,000. Kept good records. Sage Green. Driver's seat has wear. Runs fine but turbo feature doesn't function.
Does it matter if the turbo doesn't work or is that a sign of an underlying problem?

Even if you have $5000 or so in the bank for the repairs, I still would not do this. These cars were not reliable at all. They were plagued with electrical problems, the turbo is expensive to replace, and overall they are expensive to work on. And it will need work. If the turbo threw metal slivers into the motor when it blew, then it the engine is toast as well. Chances are the transmission is shot as well. This car is on borrowed time, and the fact the turbo blew means it has one tire on a banana peel, and another in the salvage lot.
Thank the seller for their time, and WALK AWAY!

This is a bad deal! The "turbo function" is not an optional function. The engine needs the turbo to work properly as the turbo forces air into the engine to give it performance. No turbo no power. Turbos are not cheap! And 143,000 miles is not considered low mileage.

I would not buy this Saab, those Turbos will simply keep burning and you will have black smoke, which you could drive on but it would eventually decrease your motor efficiency and decrease gas mileage. For a $1000 car, find a nice used Toyota or Honda and you'll sleep easier.

It would at least double the price of the car to repair the turbo. Without it, your engine performance will suffer.

the price seems good but I wouldn't call that low mileage check records to see if timing belt was replaced. take it somewhere you can put it on a rack and look at the under carriage, rusty fuel and brake lines is a problem with older cars

I don't believe it is much of a problem for the turbo, but you are getting a GREAT deal. The car is worth, (From your description), $2,400. If it's what u want, I say go!
